Light Workshop
This is a highly engaging hands-on workshop for grades
3-8. Classroom-sized groups of students visit stations with all kinds of
hands-on experiences demonstrating the amazing properties of light.
Discovery, experimentation, observation and excitement are integrated
into each activity.
This workshop is a wonderful stand-alone science
experience. It also is the perfect supplement to the Thomas Edison
program. Students can imagine themselves into the role of the inventor,
and a number of the exercises demonstrate items used by Edison in the
development of the movie picture camera or the light bulb or are items
familiar to Edison and his family.
-
Station 1 presents a variety
of optical illusions for your students to try to figure out and
focus on how we perceive light.
-
Station 2 presents activities with
lenses, microscopes, telescopes, magnifying glasses,
kaleidoscopes demonstating what happens when we bend light.
-
Station 3 demonstrates how
motion pictures are produced. Flip books, and early forms of
moving picture systems such as the zoetrope are demonstrated.
View Masters and Stereoscopes (precursors to the View
Master) are at this station too! 3-D pictures and glasses will also be
at this station.
-
Station 4 have experiments
with ultraviolet light, holograms, diffusion filters, prisms and much more.
Laser
light demonstrations will be part of this workshop as well!
We recommend each group spend 35-45 minutes. Your lab technician will
briefly explain general properties of light while training the students
on the activities at each station. The students then rotate to each
station. Many schools chose to send one or two grades through this
workshop, depending on the size of the school and the number of classes
involved. Call us and we can tailor an experience just right for your
school. |
