  6. Create a Vocabulary Game Read Whitewashing the Fence from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. As you read, write down at least 15 words that you don't know or that you think other students might need to learn. After reading, find the definitions and use the words to create a vocabulary game to share with your classmates.

  7. Creating Art From Words Read the first paragraph from Chapter 2 of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer describing an early Saturday morning when Mark Twain's character, Tom Sawyer, sets out to whitewash a fence. Draw and color a picture of what the scene could look like.

  9. Learn about Steamboats Samuel Clemens took the pen name Mark Twain from his experience as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River in the 1860s.
